“Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from who seven demons had come out; Joanna the wife of Chuza, the manager of Herod’s household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means.” Luke 8:1-3
Early in Jesus’ ministry, he had women disciples. Could we really expect anything less from this radical rabbi who was also the Son of God? Jesus wasn’t afraid of doing a new thing and reaching out to women is a part of that. Mary, Joanna, Susanna, and “many others” had encountered Jesus and were transformed by his love and healing. They responded with faith and then movement. In the case of the women above, they literally moved around with Jesus. And financially supported him and his guys. From their own money. Women Disciples is so named in their honor. These everyday women who did incredible things provide an example of what we can do when we respond to Jesus in faith.
Women Disciples is a place where you can find encouragement in your faith journey. Together, we will cheer each other on as our beliefs grow from faith to movement. We will develop our God-given gifts and be inspired to use them in whatever arena we find ourselves: home, work, church, relationships, community. Some topics might include looking at women in the Bible, interviews of everyday women using their gifts, simple ways to grow in relationship with God, practical ways to discover gift mix and strategies to use them. My hope is that we would walk away from Women Disciples with anticipation of what God is doing in and through our lives. It’s sure to be an adventure.
